Yesterday was my friend Mary’s birthday. I didn’t wish her a happy birthday until around 8:30 last night when I knew she was well away from work and couldn’t possibly have been laid off. Yes. laid off.
Here’s what happened: Two years ago I ever so thoughtfully decorated Mary’s office at NLC. The door was covered in birthday greetings, crepe paper streamers and various other happy little tidbits of love. There were also treats, deliciously delightful treats. To know Mary, is to LOVE Mary, and I was determined to start her day off right.
We wait, no Mary: we wait, no Mary … we pretend to work. "She’s coming! She’s Coming!"
See Mary walk down the hall,
See Mary walking down the hall carrying her brand new birthday cookbook,
See Mary, Mary is not smiling,
See Mary, Mary is sad.
Sad, sad, Mary.
Doesn’t Mary like her fancy office?
Mary likes her fancy office.
Why is Mary sad?
See Allyson follow Mary,
See Allyson talk to Mary,
See Mary come into my office.
Why are you sad Mary?
Allyson just laid Mary off.
Does Allyson know it is Mary’s birthday?
Bad, bad, Allyson!
Allyson met Mary in the parking lot.
Allyson laid Mary off in the parking lot.
Allyson must not like birthdays!
So there you have it. Mary was laid off on her birthday. Mary is sure it was because I decorated her office on her birthday. Mary is wrong … but just in case, I waited until the end of the day to send birthday wishes.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY! I LOVE YOU MY FRIEND!
