Happy Odd Day

Happy ODD DAY … 5-7-9!  Yeah, it’s little trivia tidbits like this that I really enjoy … call it my ‘nerd bone’ acting up.  And on the subject of nerds … what’s so wrong about being a full-blown nerd anyway?  I like to think that as a member of the nerd network, I bring a quality of uniqueness into all that I do.

By the way, Geeks and Nerds are NOT synonymous.  Here’s why:

Nerds wear ill-fitting clothes, have bad hair, have a full arsenal of esoteric knowledge, lean towards more intellectual pursuits and are generally more reserved.  While many people might think of the "NERD" to be a negative connotation, I rather enjoy the freedom it gives me to be myself … no apologies needed (or offered).  By the way, the word ‘NERD’ was first introduced way back in 1950 when Dr. Seuss wrote about them in his book, "If I Ran the Zoo".  Are you ready?  I even know the quote (which borders on Geek, but that’s another paragraph).  The setting. our main character and narrator is naming all of the things that he/she would have in the zoo.  Ready?AHEM:  "a Nerkle, a Nerd, and a Seersucker too".  Cool, huh!

Geeks, on the other hand, are considered to be a more loving sort that happens to possess a certain affinity for things such as electronics, and perhaps are more academically programmed.  There are many types of Geeks: science geeks, electronic geeks, historical and re-enactment geeks, literature geeks … there is no end to geek-dom which is a dandy bit to know.  Geek trivia bit: What was the name of the ‘dud’ in the old game, "Mystery Date" ?  Answer: Poindexter … a true Geek name if ever there was one!  By the way: Abi Red heart‘s Geeks!

If you really want to see Geeks and Nerds in action, check out the sitcom ‘Big Bang Theory’;  movie, ‘Star Trek’; a great website, ‘thinkgeek.com’; quote, "Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one" popularized on the Internet and incorrectly attributed to Bill Gates. (nerd fact-Actual author – Charles Sykes.)  Publications: Scientific American, Popular Science, Newsweek, anything poultry related!  The list is endless!

Todays the day!  Proudly display your Nerd or Geek, it IS after all, Odd Day!
